Channel 4 reports that a 55-year-old man was killed late Wednesday night by a hit-and-run driver on the Acosta Bridge. FHP reports the man was stopped in the left emergency lane on the bridge and was changing his right front tire just before 10:30 p.m. when he was hit by a vehicle. The unknown vehicle left the scene and there were no witnesses to the crash, the FHP report said.
Anyone with information on the location of the unknown vehicle or identity of the unknown driver, is asked to contact the FHP Communications Center at 904-359-6572 or First Coast CrimeStoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
What a tragedy that this accident occurred and for the individual to leave the scene of the accident is unforgivable and illegal. Florida law enforcement officials say hit and run crashes are increasing at an alarming rate. Florida had more than 80,000 hit and run crashes in 2014. Fatal hit and run crashes increased by 23 percent in Florida between 2013 and 2014 and nearly half of those victims were pedestrians, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
