The Times Union reported yesterday that a tragedy has hit upstate New York. A minivan carrying two families was hit by a runaway trailer hauling crushed cars, killing four young children and three adults in their early 20s,. The seven victims were killed and a man was injured when their van was hit by a trailer that broke away from a truck on Route 13 around 6 p.m. Wednesday in the rural town of Truxton, about 25 miles south of Syracuse. Officials said the trailer was loaded with crushed cars when it disconnected from the rig and slammed into the van, ripping it apart. Both vehicles came to rest on the shoulder of the roadway. A sign along Route 13 near the town line reads: œPlease drive safely. We [heart] our children”.

A runaway trailer accident happens when the speed of the truck does not match the speed of the trailer. The speed of the trailer can cause the entire vehicle to veer out of control. Large commercial vehicles require a specific set of skills in order to operate safely. For this reason, truck drivers on Florida highways and across the country are required to have certain licensing, depending on the type of vehicle they operate.
